My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?
It could be… Bleeding, swollen, or red, puffy gums can indicate periodontal disease, also called gum disease. Many times, these symptoms are painless, so patients don’t think they have a problem, but gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it can lead to health problems such as strokes, heart attacks, and complications with diabetes and pregnancy. So, if you have bleeding gums, you should visit us for a check up. If periodontal disease is present, and we find it in the early stages, treatment is easy. For advanced conditions, we offer scaling, root planing, and Arestin therapy, or referral to a periodontist.
